What’s Involved

Timings: 2 hour facilitated workshop (timings may be adjusted slightly eg. for full day bookings)
Venue: Portland Basin Museum
Costs: £111.50 for TMBC schools / £122 for non-TMBC schools

Meet the History Keeper from the Ministry of Time and take a look at domestic life for people living and working on canals. Find out how transport in Tameside has changed from the earliest packhorses through canals and railways to modern roads. Led by a costumed facilitator in character, participants will compare working life in Tameside before, during and after the Industrial Revolution.

Journey together round the museum and canal basin and consider why transport is so important for work and leisure. Can your team take on the great Crate-Loading Challenge and beat the clock to piece the Transport Timeline back together? What inspiration will you draw from the decorative narrowboats moored at Portland Basin today?

The group will split and swap over to ensure a quality experience for everyone. Participants will also get hands on with our Tameside ‘history mystery’ handling objects. Build a bigger picture of Tameside’s past, compare to the now and imagine the future with our activity sheet and resources. We provide everything your group will need to take part.

Learning Opportunities
