Bats will be the highlight of Tameside half-term programme, adding a spooky touch just in time for Halloween.

On Wednesday, 30 October, adults and children are invited to join bat expert Russ Hedley for a nigh ttime walk to explore the fascinating world of bats. Learn about their habitats, how they navigate the night, andt heir vital role in the ecosystem.

The walk begins at 5.30pm, in front of the Portland Basin Museum in Ashton. Attendees are advised to bring a torch or fully charged phone, dress warmly for potentially wet weather, and wear sturdy footwear for walking along the canal towpath.

Fun and learning at Tameside Libraries

The South Lancashire Bat Group will be hosting specialsessions for children (ages 11 and under) to learn all about bats and why theyare important creatures. There will be crafts, treasure hunts, and fun gamesfor everyone to enjoy.

Creative Workshops at Portland Basin Museum

Artist Caroline Coates will lead creative sessions at Portland Basin Museum during half-term. On Tuesday, 29 October, children can make their own Halloween masks, and on Thursday, 31 October, they can craft embossed foil art inspired by folk traditions like the Mexican Day of the Dead.

These drop-in sessions run from 10am to 4pm and cost £1.35 per child. Family trails are also available to explore the museum.

Make Your Own Mischievous Creature at Tameside Local Studies Centre

On Wednesday, 30 October, children can learn about the folklore of boggarts—mischievous spirits believed to live in Tameside.

‍

Participants can create their own pom-pom boggart and develop its backstory, as well as learn spells to keep these creatures at bay. Fancy dress is welcome!

The workshop takes place from 2.30 to 4pm at Tameside Local Studies Centre on Cotton Street East, Ashton. For more information, call 0161342 4242.

Mushroom Workshop at Portland Basin Museum

Also on 30 October, from 11.30am to 3pm, Myco – the Manchester Mushroom Co-op – will be hosting a family-friendly mushroom cultivation workshop at Portland Basin Museum.

‍

Participants will learn how to grow mini-oyster mushrooms in their own mushroom bucket. Sign up on arrival, as spaces are limited.
