Fit over Fifty - a not-for-profit social enterprise community company - has been awarded £325 by Tameside Council as part of the Stalybridge Town of Culture funding. The company plans to use the grant to host a 1960’s nostalgia event in the town.

Fit over Fifty provides services to older people including reminiscence sessions, an assisted shopping service, domestic support, a companion service and exercise classes with social gatherings.

The free event will celebrate the culture from the swinging 60’s - specifically 1966 and 1967 and the summer of love. It will feature music, provided by Real Rock Radio, fancy dress, a 1960’s heritage bus, food and drink.  It will take place at the Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Pub in Stalybridge on Saturday 20th August from 12pm until 4pm - and everyone is welcome

Tony Pearson, manager at Fit over Fifty said: “This event aims to boost community engagement and guests will be able to take a trip down memory lane with memorabilia, music, archive footage and everyday objects. Fancy dress from the era will also be paraded for an extra element of fun. We have also managed to secure a visit from a Greater Manchester’s transport heritage bus from the 1960s to really help relive those days of flared trousers and the groovy sounds!”

Stalybridge community groups can apply for a Town of Culture grant of up to £500 to assist with events, activities and projects that link to the slow down theme, and must engage people beyond their existing membership networks.

The funds can be used to cover the costs of speakers, arts/crafts, running workshops, developing a play or a film, or any other reasonable costs for holding an activity or event.  Download and fill in the application form HERE.  If you have any queries about the application form or application process, please email events@tameside.gov.uk
