This week, we caught up with Siobhan Pownall, the Director of the Boundary Arts Centre in Ashton.   Boundary Arts Centre was established in April 2012 by Siobhan, who is a professional dancer and teacher.

Tell us about your business or creative venture?

At Boundary Arts Centre, which is located on Kayley Industrial Estate, Richmond Street in Ashton, we offer many classes such as Dance, Musical Theatre Acrobatic and Aerial Arts, classes are available from 2yrs+ up to adult. We hold our main show every 18 months, and as well as putting on a musical, we regularly participate in competitions, exams and lots of community events and carnivals around Tameside and Greater Manchester. We also provide private music, singing, drama and dance lessons.

What do you love about Ashton and Tameside?

Tameside has so many different opportunities for children and adults when it comes to the arts and I love how it brings everyone together.\

How is Ashton’s heritage and culture reflected in your business or venture?

We are a family run business and we pride ourselves in providing a friendly and inclusive environment. Ashton has always had a large arts community, and this is something I always remember from being a child - watching and performing in many shows at the Tameside Hippodrome!

What do you believe would bolster the town’s cultural/ creative /local business community?

I believe having a large performance space would really take the arts community to the next level, most local theatres only accommodate small audiences - we would really benefit from a large theatre/ performance space that could be used by all.

What are your 3 favourite venues/ventures and services in the town…

We love the spectacular Christmas events that the town puts on, we have been part of them for many years. For Christmas 2022, we teamed up with Tameside Council and Cabassa Arts from the Vale in Mossley and provided carnival dancers for the parade and show in Ashton. The Village Hotel in Ashton is always a favourite.  Lastly, the mental health and extra support provided by Mind, Pauline Town and Infinity initiatives.
