Discover Ashton’s historial  treasures with the new trail

We're excited to announce the launch of a new trail this month, designed to guide you through Ashton’s rich cultural heritage. This journey of discovery celebrates the town’s unique history, encourages physical activity, fosters social connections, and invites everyone to explore our local heritage—all thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) funding.

Explore Ashton’s heritage

The trail is a manageable, family-friendly stroll marked by twelve lampposts, each serving as a waypoint. All access points are within a one-mile radius, making it easy for people of all ages to enjoy. As you follow the trail, you'll visit some of Ashton’s most cherished attractions and learn about the town's 100-year history.

Key stops include:

  • Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre: A treasure trove of local knowledge.
  • Portland Basin Museum: Showcasing the best of our history.
  • Ashton Library and Information Service: The central hub for community information and resources.

This trail offers more than just a historical journey; it’s also a unique way to support your wellbeing. Combining physical exercise with the exploration of your surroundings, the trail provides opportunities to connect with others and maybe even spark a new interest in local history.

Easy access and participation

To join in, simply scan the QR codes along the route or pick up a leaflet from any of the attractions. The trail is designed to be easily accessible and enjoyable at your own pace.

Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s Assistant Executive Member for Culture, Heritage, Participation, and Sport, shares her enthusiasm:

“The Ashton Wander is a fabulous idea as it combines creativity and culture to highlight some of the town’s best-loved heritage assets. It offers residents, visitors, and even people who work in Ashton the chance to get out and explore to find out more about the town and borough’s history or get involved in something new. Getting out and doing something new is great for both your mental and physical wellbeing, and it is easy to link up with the trail and take and enjoy it at your own pace.”
