The Ashton Wander celebrates Ashton’s past and present - and invites you to take time for yourself, or with friends or family and step through time as you move around town. It also provides lots of opportunity for you to take in your surroundings, connect with the community and maybe find a new hobby or activity to enjoy along the way.

Three free places to visit and explore …

Within one mile along the Ashton Wander trail, you'll find Ashton Library and Information Service, Tameside Local Studies & Archives Centre and Portland Basin Museum. All three are free to visit, and have free public WiFi.

1. Ashton Library and Information Service, Tameside One, Market Place, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 6BH
‍

Ashton Library offers public computers, talking books, language courses, photocopying and a scanner. The library also hosts regular events for a range of age and is an accessible building with adult changing facilities available.

2. Tameside Local Studies & Archives Centre, Cotton Street East, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 7BY

‍

Tameside Local Studies & Archives Centre is the place to go for records and material relating to the history of Tameside’s nine towns.

‍

The team can point you towards the right resources and help you get started. There are no stairs at the centre, and our Oldham Road entrance has fully automatic doors.

3. Portland Basin Museum, Portland Place, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0QA

Portland Basin Museum is free to visit, fully accessible and family-friendly. Explore what working and home life used to be like in Tameside.

See historic machines and stroll down a 1920s street. The museum is fully physically accessible and has a lift between floors. There are plenty of toilets and a separate baby changing room.
