The monthly street party returns on 3rd Nov to bring some sparkle to the darker evenings in Ashton
November’s Fridays on the Square is fast approaching, and this month will see Ashton light the way for the festive season with lantern making sessions and elf-inspired crafts.
The event on Friday 3rd November, 4pm - 8pm in Fletcher Square, Ashton, will also be a colourful and lively one with performances from the Northern Dholis and the Rajasthani Brass Band, coupled with puppets and drummers from carnival collective, Global Grooves. The entertainment will bring vibrancy, joy and light to the darker skies as winter approaches.
As always, attendees can delight in the choice of food available from the street food trucks. This month, you can also head into the Indoor Market and pull up a seat to enjoy food from Nat’s Bombay Kitchen, Dina Persian and Tarps Filipino Street Food.
The Northern Dholis are a team of highly skilled Bhangra Dhol Players who bring the rhythm with their lively and energetic drumming performances. Meanwhile, the Rajasthani Brass Band from Manchester have performed all over the globe with their inspiring music, which is guaranteed to make you smile.
Global Grooves is an artist-led carnival arts organisation based in Mossley. It brings together the very best culturally diverse artists from around the world to create stunning carnival presentations. At the event, Glocal Grooves will be showcasing puppets representing Rama and - two 4m+ puppets that will be joining communities in Ashton to celebrate Diwali. Musical accompaniment will be providing the grooves for the pair as they wander around the town centre meeting and greeting guests!
On the craft side, children can enjoy a paper and tea light activity with local illustrator and artist Caroline Coates, and decorate Christmas elves for the Ashton Christmas Tree with Ashton’s very own arts collective, Phantasmagoria.
The family-friendly Fridays on the Square events in Ashton-under-Lyne aim to showcase the best local food, fused with art activities, entertainment and music. Created by Tameside Council and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund the events aim to bring a sense of vibrancy and community back to the town centre.
