This year, community group Khush Amdid has played a part in the festive celebrations for Tameside with batik sessions with Cabasa Carnival Arts, which have helped to create the material for the Spirit of the North puppet which will lead the spectacular lantern parade.
The puppet will spearhead the Christmas Lantern Parade, which is part of the Northern Lights event - an amazing community procession bringing light to Tameside. The Northern Lights - Tameside’s Christmas Celebration - will take place in Ashton on Saturday 19th November between 3pm and 6:30pm.
We caught up with Naila Sharif from the group to find out more: “Khush Amdid has participated in the Tameside lantern parade event for the last two years” said Naila, who is Chairwoman of Khush Amdid a Local Councillor.
“We have encouraged and engaged women from the BAME community who are often under-represented in community events. They have spoken to the organisers to ensure that the activities are culturally appropriate to ensure maximum participation. Khush Amdid members and the wider BAME community are involved in the workshops and the parade.
“Khush Amidid, as the name translates in Urdu means welcome, and it is a very friendly and welcoming organisation supporting women and engaging them in activities that promote their mental health and wellbeing. The group empowers women with confidence and skills to be able to support themselves, their families and the community and we eradicate social exclusion and isolation by providing a safe space.
“Tameside people can support Khush Amdid by appreciating that our activities are run by dedicated volunteers. Women are welcome to come to 4C on Mondays 11am - 1.30 pm. If they are happy they can become members and take advantage of all the things Khush Amdid offers such as mental health activities, celebrations, healthy eating sessions, day trips, cultural events and even exercise.”
