Featuring over 200 performers from across Tameside and Greater Manchester, the carnival will bring a sparkling slice of Brazil and Notting Hill to the streets of Stalybridge on Sunday 11 September 2022. The event will offer a spectacular finale to Gongoozler Fest, three days of vibrant events celebrating art, heritage and the local waterways of Stalybridge.

From marching bands, to carnival Morris groups, to Indian Dhol drummers, to Brazilian street bands, Tameside’s streets have always been alive with music - never more so than when the carnival is in town.

Expect giant walkabout puppets, vibrant jewel-coloured costumes fashioned from hand-printed silks, amazing brass, lively Brazilian-inspired drumming and a vivid sea of handmade flags carried by local community performers.

The procession's creator, Mossley-based carnival arts organisation Global Grooves, has recently returned from London, where it was the only northern group selected to take part in the official Platinum Jubilee Pageant. Closer to home, Global Grooves wowed crowds this summer at Bluedot, Kendal Calling and Deer Shed festivals.

Part of Stalybridge Town of Culture and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Cotton Carnival will celebrate the region's global connections in a uniquely Tameside style, exploring the rich history of the region’s textiles industry.

Dancer? Musician? Artist? Maker? All round carnival lover? Everyone is encouraged to get involved in the carnival. Global Grooves are recruiting over 200 local people to perform as dancers, drummers, brass players and puppeteers.
