Christmas in Tameside is being given a sprinkle of light and magic this year with a festive extravaganza of celebration, starting with the Northern Lights Christmas Lantern Parade in Ashton.
The spectacular, light-filled community lantern parade will wind its way along the streets bringing festive cheer while it lights up the route to the town square for everyone to see.
In order to make sure the Northern Lights Lantern Parade is fabulous and festive, individuals and community groups have been taking part in free lantern making workshops in the local area, and some are involved in creating the figurehead of the parade, named the Spirit of the North with Cabasa CIC.
Cabasa, a carnival arts organisation based in Mossley, has partnered with Tameside Cultural Services - part of Tameside Council - to create the Christmas Lantern Parade as part of the Northern Lights event. The Northern Lights - Tameside’s Christmas Celebration - will take place in Ashton on 19th November between 3pm and 6:30pm.
Dawn Linnie from AgeUK Tameside tells us about the group’s participation in the event.
“Our 131 Club clients have been involved in the making of the giant lantern called ‘The Spirit of the North,” said Dawn. “They have participated in a creative writing session, bringing together positive memories and quotes. These quotes have been interpreted into a couple of four-foot silk banners which the clients then helped to print in a batik workshop. The banners will flow from the Spirit of the North.
“People can come out to support the spectacular lantern parade and enjoy the live music and performances with the grand finale of the Christmas Light Switch on.“
The session went very well, with some of the participants commenting:
“I really enjoyed the whole process of being able to see my own words put into pictures, that the whole of Tameside will get to see.”
“Being involved has made me feel very proud.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing the finished head, I’ve been telling my family all about it, they are going to look out for our part.”
“I feel part of the community knowing others like myself have all done their bit.”
Dawn continued: “Age UK Tameside is committed to serving the needs of older people across the Borough of Tameside. Since 1974 we have been committed to serving the needs of older people in the community to remain active, maintain independence and improve quality of life. Age UK is for all of us because age is a part of life, and we celebrate the wisdom, the calm and the confidence age can bring.
“There are many ways people can support Age UK Tameside, by getting involved to help us make Later Life better for all. There are lots of things people can do. Whether it’s to give their time and skills volunteering, taking part in a fundraising event, donating, or helping with our campaigns. Any help would be much appreciated.
“During these challenging times as the weather turns colder, we are offering a FREE hot two course meal to the over 50’s of Tameside. We are also supporting Action Together’s Tameside toy appeal. Christmas will be a very difficult time this year for many families in Tameside, particularly those living in poverty. In response to these unprecedented times the Tameside Toy Appeal 2022 is needed now more than ever.
“Our staff and clients have already started donating. We are also a collection point for anyone wishing to donate. We also have lots of fun and surprises planned for our clients and customers.”
